Do underwater drones require a tether?
Yes. Water severely blocks radio and Wi-Fi signals, making wireless video transmission nearly impossible. All reliable marine ROVs use a physical tether connected to a surface transmitter or directly to the pilot's remote control.
How deep can consumer marine ROVs dive?
Most mid-tier to premium consumer models, like the Chasing Gladius MINI S and FIFISH V-EVO, can safely dive up to 330 feet (100 meters). Budget models like the Chasing Dory are typically restricted to about 50 feet.
Can underwater drones handle ocean currents?
Premium models equipped with 5 to 8 vectored thrusters can fight moderate currents of up to 3 or 4 knots. However, smaller, lightweight budget drones will be easily swept away and should only be used in calm, flat water.
How do you maintain an underwater drone after use?
You must soak and rinse the drone, tether, and motors in fresh water for 30 minutes after every saltwater dive. This prevents salt crystals from forming inside the thrusters and halts electrochemical corrosion on metal components.
Can I attach a grabber arm to my underwater drone?
Many prosumer models, including the Chasing Gladius MINI S and Chasing M2 S, support modular attachments. You can easily attach mechanical grabber claws, secondary cameras, or water samplers to the mounting rails.
Why does underwater footage look green or blue?
Water absorbs the red spectrum of light very quickly as you descend. To fix this, you need an ROV with high-lumen, color-accurate LED headlights (like 5500K white lights) or software that features a true-color restoration algorithm.
